SRHS Update: Week of August 20

Good Morning Parents, Students, Staff, and Friends of Sanborn Regional High School:

We are just a week away from the start of another great school year! Here are your important announcements for the week:

1. Within the last two weeks, you should have received your child's official "back to school packet" from the school with forms that must be completed for the first day. I have attached this information to this email. Freshman will receive their schedules on their first day of school and we have reserved PLENTY of time to work with them to make sure they have any schedule adjustments made that they need so they can have a successful school year.

2. IMPORTANT: All students MUST bring a completed emergency form, signed by a parent or guardian, with them on the first day of school. Students who are participating in athletics must have this form submitted before summer practices start. We are also asking all students who are applying for a parking permit to submit this form with their parking application. 

3. I have attached a letter from the Exeter Adult Education Program, for your review.

4. School starts Tuesday August 28 for freshman and Wednesday August 29 for all other grades. Students attending SST should plan to come to school beginning on August 27 to catch the bus to SST. Report times for that are 8:50 for the mid-session program and 11:50 for the PM session on the 27th and 28th.

5. Schedules for all students in grades 10-12 were in the mail a few weeks ago. If you need to request a schedule modification, please use the online form linked below. This will allow the Guidance Department to effectively address your concerns and get back to you in a timely manner with a response.

6. The Ice Hockey Booster Club is holding a classic rock n roll band benefit show on August 25th.  It will start at 7pm in the gym with lots of food and drinks.  This is the Saturday before school starts so it should be fun for parents and kids to get together and catch up.  Tickets are a 5$ donation.  Please support a great cause!

7. I have attached two “events calendars” for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year. These may be adjusted slightly before the start of school, but for your planning purposes, I wanted you all to have these now so you could begin to save the appropriate dates in your calendar. One calendar has all of our high school events, one has our district music and drama events.

Tonight, I will be speaking to you about scholarship, one of the four pillars of the National Honor Society. Scholarship is one of those words that we all can identify with, but it isn’t that easy to define. Dictionaries often define it to mean “academic achievement, learning; or the qualities of a scholar.” The qualities of a scholar --- well my ninth grade English teacher Mr. Tomallo never would have allowed me to use the word I was trying to define in the definition, so I have to dig deeper. What is a scholar? Again I turn to the dictionary, and I find the following: “A scholar is a learned person, someone who attends school or studies with a teacher.” I’m still not satisfied with this result. Does Your School Facility Need a Makeover?

Does your school facility need a makeover? According to this 2012 report by the National Center for Education Statistics, 53% of American schools are due for such an upgrade. Upgrades can be done in ways to fit almost any school budget. The key for school principals is to stretch the financial resources they have to provide the biggest rate of return possible to enhance student learning and overall school culture.   At a recent visit to my child’s middle school, the principal took me on a tour of recent upgrades made to their front entrance lobby. The building, built quickly and cheaply in the 1970’s has long since reached the status of obsolete in our community, yet we as a voting community just aren’t ready to support a project to build a new middle school. My Speech to the NHS Inductees on Character

Character is perhaps the most abstract of the four National Honor Society pillars, and that perhaps makes it the most difficult to quantify and speak about. Most of us would say that we know good character when we see it. We identify with examples of strong character. Consider this situation: Four friends from out of state are passing through Kingston on their way to a vacation in the White Mountains. Their names are Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer. Yes, for those of you who recognize this story I am talking about the 4 main characters from the television series Seinfeld and this is the famous “final episode.” They witness a robbery in broad daylight. The robber has his hand in his pocket, and the victim shouts that the man has a gun. As soon as the robber runs away, a Kingston policeman appears on the scene; but instead of pursuing the robber, he arrests Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer for having violated the "Good Samaritan" law.
