SRHS Update: Week of March 19
Dear Parents, Students, and Friends of Sanborn Regional High School. Here are your important announcements for the week:
1. Did you know we now have our very own PTO? Please consider joining. The membership form is attached. Our next PTO meeting is this Wednesday March 21 at 6pm in the library. Consider sticking around that night because after the PTO event is another great opportunity....see item #2 below!
2. Hello Students, Parents, and Guardians,
Last Thursday and Friday the freshman, sophomores, and juniors at Sanborn Regional High School received a presentation from the World Challenge organization, about a trip to Ecuador the Outing Club has researched and planned, which we would like to experience during April vacation of 2013. This email is going out to all the students who signed up for more information and included parent/guardian email addresses.
Next Wednesday at 7pm in the High School auditorium, World Challenge will return to give a more in depth presentation to students and parents/guardians. This meeting will be an opportunity to ask questions and get a sense of all aspects of the trip. Attendance at this meeting is for exploratory reasons only, it is to gauge the interest and potential number of student participants. If this meeting is well attended and proves a minimum number of students are strongly interested and have parent/guardian support, we will meet with the school board for trip approval, after which we will set a date for when students must make a decision on their committal. Once students have committed, we will meet again and start planning and fundraising.
World Challenge is a 25 year old organization that is based out of England, but has expanded to the US, including Boston. The trip to Ecuador includes three major phases, the first is acclimatization, where students spend a few days learning about the culture of Ecuador, including customs, language, and food. The second phase is community service, where students work to help a rural community with a project that may include building a trail, helping teach at a school, painting a mural, or any number of activities. The last portion is the adventure, where students participate in activities like backpacking through the rainforest, rafting, or zip lining. Throughout the entire trip, students are the leaders and work together to manage a budget, make decisions on activities and the itinerary, and navigate on hikes and travel routes. While in Ecuador we will be with a World Challenge guide and have access to satellite phones for communication and emergencies. This trip would be a unique experience unlike any ever offered at Sanborn Regional High School. This is not a tour company, but an adventure company focused on helping students become leaders who are empathetic, responsible, cooperative, and globally aware.
We are thrilled to be offering such an opportunity and look forward to seeing you all next Wednesday. If you have any questions, please ask your son or daughter about the presentation they received and feel free to email either of us at the contact information below.
